My name is Emma Frost and this will be the 5th year I have organised this Charity Ball and I would first like to give you a bit of background about me and why I organise this event.
In 2002 I was diagnosed with cervical cancer - I was aged 25. Unfortunately the tumour was quite large and therefore a hysterectomy was too risky, so I underwent 9 weeks of daily radiotherapy alongside 4 chemotherapy sessions and 19 hours of internal radiotherapy.
I saw in 2003 quite positively, looking forward to my wedding in August and with the cancer behind me (or so I thought). In February of 2003 I heard the dreaded news that the cancer was back. As we did not know if anything could be done, we brought the wedding forward and married on 6 April 2003.
Luckily for me I was able to undergo a very rare, but drastic, operation at Nottingham City Hospital on 5 June 2003. The operation was called a Total Pelvic Exenteration and took 9 hours in total. It was a radical hysterectomy and also removed my bladder, bowel and vagina. I am now left with 2 permanent stomas (a urostomy and a colostomy).
I am now fit and healthy - and have been cancer free for 5 years. I was the lucky one. There are many people, young and old, who are not so lucky and I feel that I survived for a reason - to help others. One of the things I do is organise an annual charity ball. This year all money raised will be split 50/50 between MacMillan Cancer Support in Lincolnshire and Jo's Trust (a charity dedicated to women, their families and friends affected by pre-cancer and cancer of the cervix).
The first ball was held in 2004 and it is going from strength to strength. Anyway, enough about me. Please read through the site and I hope to see you at the ball.
